The Planning Commission acts as the land use advisory body for the City Council and reviews and makes recommendations to the City Council on the City's Comprehensive Plan, Shoreline Plan, amendments to the SEPA and environmentally sensitive area codes, Subdivision, Zoning and Sign Codes.

The City is currently updating its Comprehensive Plan, which guides citywide policies on topics that affect our daily lives including housing, transportation, economic development, the natural environment, land use, and parks. This plan required as part of the Washington State Growth Management Act is scheduled to be adopted at the end of 2024 and is updated every 10 years.

The Planning Commission is comprised of seven community members appointed by the Mayor to three year terms. The Planning Commission meets regularly at 6:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. In 2024, the Planning Commission may decide to hold a second meeting each month while reviewing updates to the Comprehensive Plan.
