City of Bonney Lake officials are saddened by the passing of former Mayor Neil Johnson, Jr., who was elected to City Council in 2002 and served as Mayor from 2006 to 2021.

“Former Mayor Johnson will be remembered not only for his leadership but for the kindness and integrity with which he served the Bonney Lake community,” said Mayor Terry Carter.

Under Mayor Johnson’s leadership, the city experienced substantial growth and improvement. His focus on community engagement through city events not only strengthened local pride but also brought residents together in meaningful ways. The improvements to parks and trails enhanced their playability and accessibility. Through the development of critical infrastructure, Mayor Johnson effectively addressed the growing demands of the city, while his commitment to recruiting and retaining businesses of all sizes boosted the local economy. These initiatives highlight his vision for a thriving, prosperous city.

Mayor Johnson was also a strong advocate and supporter of Team Bonney Lake.

“Neil, as Mayor, brought me into his leadership team in 2007. I appreciated his confidence in me, his mentorship, his leadership, and more so his friendship over the years,” said City Administrator John Vodopich. “He was a dedicated public servant to the Bonney Lake community and will be sorely missed.”

City officials also express their deepest condolences to the Johnson family.

Flags at City facilities will be flown at half-mast in honor of Mayor Johnson’s service to our community.
