It is with great sadness we announce the passing of former Councilmember James Rackley today, July 11, 2019, following his valiant battle with cancer.
Rackley announced his retirement from office due to ongoing health issues on June 5, 2019. Rackley was first elected to office in 2000, and served on council for nearly 20 years. He was proud to serve the Bonney Lake community, and played an instrumental role in how the city has transformed over the years.
“My heart goes out to all of his family and friends in their time of grief,” said Mayor Neil Johnson. “Jim was not only a fun person to work with on council, but also a friend. I will never forget in 2005 when Jim ran against me for mayor. We remained friends during the campaign and we both agreed we would talk only about the issues. What was cool is that after the election results came in, Jim attended my election party where he was very supportive. I will miss Jim and his infectious laugh.”
City Council, staff, and members of the public gathered at the City Council meeting on June 11 to recognize Rackley for his years of service. Rackley shared, “It’s been a beautiful life and I would like to thank the people I know which is hundreds, especially here at city hall. I really appreciated the job. Thank you very much.”
City flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of Rackley on Friday, July 12, 2019.
No memorial service is planned. Those wishing to honor Rackley’s life are encouraged to make a donation in his name to St. Jude.
